Turkish onyx — the stone you light from behind
Onyx is the one natural stone bought for what happens when light passes through it. Turkish quarries — concentrated around Afyon and Denizli — produce honey, golden, white and green onyx whose translucency runs deep enough for backlit feature walls, bar fronts, reception counters and pendant panels. Slabs are cut at 2 cm (or 3 cm for horizontal use), polished, and almost always resin-and-mesh backed, because onyx is a fragile stone that rewards careful handling with effects no other material gives.
Order it book-matched: consecutive slabs from the same block open like mirrored pages, and a lit book-matched wall is the single most photographed detail in any lobby it occupies. We photograph the actual slabs — lit and unlit — before you commit.
Buying onyx sensibly
Onyx is priced per square metre by colour intensity and figure, and lot-to-lot variation is larger than in marble — buy the whole project's need from one block series, never in instalments. Crated slabs travel upright in A-frames; a modest project of 50–100 m² shares container space with other stone, so onyx rarely needs its own container.
