Travertine pavers for outdoor use
Pavers are thicker than tiles — normally 3 cm, 4 cm or 5 cm — because they carry foot and sometimes vehicle load over a bedding layer rather than being bonded to a slab. Standard sizes are 30×60, 40×60 and 60×60 cm, plus the four-piece French pattern set that lays as a repeating Roman bond.
For pool surrounds and terraces, specify a tumbled or brushed finish: both keep slip resistance when wet, unlike a polished surface. Bullnose and pencil-edge pool coping is produced to match the field paver so the perimeter detail comes from the same lot and the same colour range.
Travertine stays notably cooler underfoot than dark concrete or porcelain in direct sun, which is the practical reason it dominates poolside specification across the Gulf, southern Europe and the southern United States.
Frost, thickness and ordering
For freeze–thaw climates specify 5 cm and ask for the water absorption figure — lower absorption means better frost resistance, and the test report should accompany the quote. In mild climates 3 cm over a proper bed is standard practice.
